What Term & Health Insurance Don’t Cover ?

Term and health insurance may not replace lost earnings after an accident. Discover how personal accident insurance can help protect your income, savings and family.

Imagine having a Rs 1 Crore Term Insurance Policy and Rs 10 Lakh health insurance cover. You may believe that you and your family is financial protected. But incase of a serious road accident, you are alive, but are unable to work for a duration of 6 months.

Your health insurance policy may cover eligible hospital expenses. Your term insurance plan generally pays nothing because you are alive whereas your home loan EMI, Education costs, Utility costs, household and other survival expenses and bills continue. The problem is no longer just paying for treatment. It is funding your life while you are recovering from an accident. This is the financial gap that personal accident insurance may take care off.

The Three Important Blind Spots You Should Understand

Insurance Plan

What Happens after an Accident?

Term Life Insurance Cover

The death benefit is not paid, because the insured is still alive

Accidental Death

The Insured survived an accident, therefore accidental death claim doesn’t trigger

Health Insurance

Pays eligible medical expenses according to the policy terms & conditions, but not your entire household budget or lost earnings

Personal Accident Insurance

May provide specified benefits for accidental death, permanent disability, temporary disability where ever it is included

A critical distinction, if you have taken “Waiver of Premium Rider,” the this is not the same as a disability income benefit rider. Similarly, health insurance may cover certain rehabilitation or other accident-related expenses when included in the policy, but it should not be assumed to replace your salary.

How Personal Accident Insurance Can Help You?
A personal accident policy may provide benefits for several types of outcomes, such as

1) Accidental Death
The nominee may receive the death claim benefit if the insured person’s death meets the policy terms and conditions.

2) Permanent Total Disablement (PTD)
A lumpsum may be payable for specified permanent disabilities, applicable as per the illustration table mentioned in the policy wordings, which mention the applicable sum insured payable by the insurance company on occurrence of the said disability, for example irrecoverable loss of sight in both eyes or loss of both entire hands or entire feet. The claim payout is based on the policy’s definitions and benefit schedule.

3) Permanent Partial Disablement (PPD)
Specified partial permanent losses may qualify for a percentage of the insured amount. The applicable percentage depends on the injury and policy schedule. Example under PPD may be loss of both ears or one ear or loss of four fingers and thumb of one hand.

4) Temporary Total Disablement (TTD)
This can be particularly relevant when an accident temporarily prevents someone from working. Some policies offer weekly cash benefits for a defined period, subject to eligibility, medical evidence, proof of salary details and ITR related documents and other limits and exclusions.

5) Other types of Benefits
Other important benefits mentioned in the policy wordings could be related to Mobility Cover and its related expenses, Burns, Disappearance where the insured person’s body cannot be located within 1 year due to any event arising as a result of any Acts of God perils during the policy period and it can be reasonably concluded that such insured person has died as a result of such accident. These types of “OTHER BENEFITS” are not universal and therefore, must be checked in the policy wordings.

Example Illustration – The Cost of 18 Weeks Away from Work
Consider a 38-year-old financial consultant earning Rs 1.8 Lakh per month. His existing financial protection includes,

· Rs 1.5 Crore term life insurance with a waiver of premium rider
· Rs 15 Lakh health insurance cover through a combination of Group Policy & Individual cover
· A hypothetical Rs 50 Lakh personal accident policy with an applicable TTD benefit

Following a road accident, he suffers fractures in both legs, undergoes a surgery and as per the doctors written consultation, cannot work for a duration of 18 weeks. For example, lets assume this person’s eligible hospital bill is Rs 6.4 Lakh and his professional income stops during recovery.

1) Hospital Expenses
His hospital bill is Rs 6.4 Lakh. His health insurer may cover eligible expenses, subject to policy terms and conditions.

2) Income lost during Recovery
If the insured cannot earn for 18 weeks, his potential loss of income is approximately Rs 7.48 Lakh

Calculation Example = [(Rs 1.8 Lakh X 12 months) / 52 week] X 18 weeks

3) Potential Personal Accident Insurance Payout
If the insured has a Rs 50 Lakh personal accident policy, and it includes a Temporary Total Disablement (TTD) benefit of 1% of the sum insured per week, he could receive Rs 50,000/- per eligible week.

Total Payout As per above example = Rs 50,000 X 18 Weeks = Rs 9 Lakh

This Rs 9 Lakh figure is a hypothetical calculation, not a guaranteed claim settlement. Actual benefits depend on the selected product, the policy wordings, applicable capping and exclusions, the definition of temporary total disability and the period approved by the insurer.

What Should You Check Before Buying?
Do not compare personal accident policies based on the sum insured alone. Review the following three points,

· TTD Benefit – Whether it is included or optional? What is the weekly payout, maximum duration and overall limit?
· PTD & PPD Schedule – Which disability qualifies, and what percentage is payable?· Fracture & Burn benefits – Are specified injuries covered even without permanent disability?· Mobility & Rehabilitation Support – What expenses qualify, and what limits apply?· Occupation & Exclusions – Are your work activities covered, and what evidence is needed to approve the claim?
· Other Insurance – Check how the policy coordinates with employer benefits, health insurance and existing accident cover

Building a More Complete Financial Protection Plan
A balanced protection strategy considers four different risks. Term insurance protects dependents financially on the insured’s demise during the policy term. A health insurance helps pay eligible medical expense. Critical illness insurance pays a lumpsum for a specified illness that meets the policy’s definition. Personal accident insurance may provide financial benefits following covered accidental death or disability, including temporary disability where selected.

The above mentioned four insurance plans are not interchangeable. Personal accident insurance generally concerns accidents, not an inability to work caused by illness or pre-existing diseases. Critical illness cover also does not necessarily replace income for every medical condition.

The Final Thought
Being alive after an accident does not mean being financially secure. Term insurance protects against the financial consequences of death. Health insurance helps manage eligible medical bills. Personal accident insurance can add another layer of protection when an accident causes disability and certain plans may provide income benefit or cash benefits during temporary recovery.

Before choosing a policy, focus on the benefits you actually need, the conditions under which they pay and whether the limits are sufficient for your financial responsibilities. The goal is not simply to buy more insurance. It is to identify the financial risks your existing policies may leave uncovered.
